LR Tobacco has been a bidi tobacco supplier in the Charotar belt of Kheda district since 1958. It is a family business, working with its own crop and with growers across the belt, supplying bidi manufacturers alongside cigarette manufacturers and nicotine extraction plants.
What makes Charotar bidi patti different
Bidi tobacco is not cigarette tobacco, and the two are not really substitutes for each other. Bidi leaf is sun-cured rather than flue-cured, it carries far more nicotine, and it has to hold its character inside a rolled tendu leaf rather than a paper tube. A cigarette blend is built to be mild and even. A bidi blend is built to be strong and to survive a slower, hotter burn in a wrapper that contributes flavour of its own.
The Charotar crop is grown rain-fed, so the plant works under water stress and puts more strength into the leaf. What a bidi tobacco supplier should be able to hold steady
Most bidi buyers are not asking for a new blend. They are asking for last year's blend again, out of a different crop. That is the harder job and it is the one we are set up for.

We build to it from our own crop and from the growers we buy from across the belt, adjust as the season moves, and hold the character steady from one lot to the next. The material we supply
- Whole leaf. Graded, sun-cured and unbroken, used in premium blends.
- Bidi patti. Graded leaf material, the main bidi stream and the bulk of what most manufacturers buy.
- Kandi and rava. Coarser fractions off the sieve, used for blend filling and in lower grades.
- Dust. The fine fraction, used as a blend component and sold to extraction plants.
- Stems. Separated stem material, sold on its own and priced accordingly.
Grade naming in this trade is regional and informal, and the same word can mean different things two districts apart. Rather than quote a code and hope it travels, we work from a sample. More on how bidi grades are described.
Buying from Gujarat
Gujarat carries much the largest share of India's bidi tobacco crop, and within Gujarat the Charotar region of Kheda and Anand is the traditional centre, where growing, sun-curing, trading and processing sit in the same tract. The chain is short. Material goes from field to graded, packed product without leaving the district, and the person selling it usually knows which plot it came from.
