Why nicotine extraction plants buy tobacco scrap, dust and rava

Tobacco scrap is waste to the people who generate it and raw material to the people who buy it. That difference in perspective is the whole basis of a steady trade between leaf processors, bidi and cigarette factories on one side and nicotine extraction plants on the other. Understanding what the material is, and why one lot is not interchangeable with the next, explains most of what happens to the price.

What scrap, dust, rava and refuse actually are

None of these are graded leaf. They are the streams that come off the floor and out of the machines while graded leaf is being made.

Broken leaf and small pieces come from handling and threshing. Rava and dust are the fine fractions that sift out during processing and rolling. Refuse is the mixed sweepings and rejected material a factory cannot use for its main product. Stem and kandi are the woody parts separated from the lamina. Cut rag and offcuts arise where leaf is cut to size.

The names shift by region and by trade, and they are not standardised the way leaf grades are. Two sellers using the same word may be offering fairly different material, which is one reason description alone settles very little in this trade.

Why extraction plants want it

An extraction plant does not care about the things leaf buyers pay for. Colour, grain, aroma, elasticity, leaf size and the integrity of the whole leaf all matter for smoking products and none of them matter once the material goes into a solvent. What matters is how much alkaloid is present and how easily it comes out.

Whole graded leaf carries a premium for appearance and smoking quality, so buying it for extraction means paying for properties that will be discarded. Scrap carries alkaloid without that premium. In some material the alkaloid content is also higher than the parent leaf, since the fractions that break down and sift out are not evenly drawn from the plant.

The supply is continuous too. As long as factories are processing leaf, these streams are being produced, which suits a plant that needs to be fed every week rather than once a season.

Why no two lots are the same

Variation in scrap is wider than variation in leaf, and it comes from several directions at once.

The parent leaf matters first. Type, region, season, rainfall and position on the stalk all move the alkaloid content before anything is processed. Then the stage that generated the material matters: what falls out during threshing is not the same as what a rolling floor sweeps up.

After that, handling decides a great deal. Whether sweepings were screened, what the floor surface was, how carefully the material was kept apart from packing waste and soil, how long it sat and in what condition it was stored. Tobacco holds moisture and moves with the weather, so the same material can arrive in very different condition depending on when and how it travelled.

The result is that scrap from one supplier in one month is a reasonable guide to what that supplier will send next month, and a poor guide to what anyone else will send.

Why price per tonne is a poor guide to value

A tonne is a measure of the container, not the contents. What an extraction plant actually buys is alkaloid delivered to the reactor, and what it actually pays is the cost of getting that alkaloid out.

Several things sit between the two. A lower assay means more tonnes for the same output, and more tonnes means more freight, more handling, more bags and more time on the plant. Water bought as tobacco evaporates before it reaches the process. Mineral matter picked up from floors and soil is paid for by weight, carried at cost, then pushed through the plant, where it wears equipment and ends up in a residue that still holds solvent. Foreign material that survives the process causes trouble downstream out of all proportion to its weight.

Consistency has a value of its own that never appears on a quotation. A plant settles at an operating point for the material it is used to. When the next delivery behaves differently, recovery drops while the operators find the new setting, and that loss belongs to the cheap lot even though nobody books it there.

The sensible comparison is therefore cost per unit of alkaloid actually recovered, landed at the plant, from a supplier whose material behaves the same way each time. Lots compared that way often rank in a different order from the same lots compared on price per tonne.
