Which tobacco has the highest nicotine content?

The plain answer to which tobacco has the highest nicotine is Nicotiana rustica, not the Nicotiana tabacum that makes up almost all commercial leaf. Rustica sits well above every commercial grade of tabacum in the published literature. Species is only the first of several things that decide what a tonne of leaf assays at, and a rustica crop grown in poor conditions can test lower than a well grown rain-fed tabacum crop.

Everything below is a published range for a leaf type, not a figure for any particular lot. Nicotine moves with variety, season, soil, grade and stalk position, so a supplier quoting one fixed percentage for a type without naming the lot is guessing.

Which tobacco has the highest nicotine, type by type

Nicotiana rustica, sold as mapacho or calcutti, is reported in the region of 3 to 9 percent nicotine on a dry leaf basis, with individual studies going higher. It is a different species from commercial tobacco, with a small thick leaf and a low yield.

Within Nicotiana tabacum, dark air-cured and fire-cured types used for snuff, chewing products and dark cigar filler are generally reported at around 2.5 to 5 percent. Indian bidi tobacco, grown rain-fed and sun-cured, sits at the upper end of the tabacum band and overlaps with the dark air-cured types. Burley, an air-cured, high-nitrogen, low-sugar leaf, is usually put at roughly 2 to 4.5 percent. Flue-cured Virginia, high in sugar, is commonly reported around 1.5 to 3.5 percent, as a rule below burley. Oriental and Turkish leaf, small and grown on poor soils, is the lowest of the commercial types at roughly 0.5 to 2 percent.

Stem and midrib always read well below the lamina of the same plant, which is why stem content pulls a lot assay down.

Read those as overlapping bands rather than a league table with clean gaps. Only the two ends are consistent: rustica at the top, oriental at the bottom.

Nicotiana rustica and why it sits at the top

Nicotiana rustica nicotine is high for a genetic reason rather than an agronomic one. Nicotine is made in the roots of the plant and moved up into the leaf, and rustica accumulates alkaloid far more aggressively than tabacum does. That is why the species turns up as a botanical insecticide base in several countries.

The catch is commercial rather than chemical. Rustica gives a small, thick, low-yielding leaf, its agronomy is not standardised at scale in most producing countries, and reliable tonnage is hard to book. For most Indian extraction plants the practical question is not rustica against tabacum. It is which tabacum raw material gives the best alkaloid recovery per tonne landed at the plant gate.

Why two lots of the same type read differently

Type is a starting point, not an answer. Nicotine tracks nitrogen supply, so leaf from rich soils reads higher than leaf from thin ones. Oriental tobacco is deliberately grown on poor light soils because its buyers want aroma and low body rather than alkaloid.

Position on the plant matters as much. Nicotine rises up the stalk. Bottom leaves carry the least, middle leaf sits in between, and tips and upper leaves carry the most, often by a wide margin over the bottom of the same plant. A lot described only as "tobacco leaf" says nothing about stalk position, and material carrying tips is a different product from material made up of lower leaf, even off the same field.

Water availability pulls in the same direction. Rain-fed crops generally assay higher than irrigated crops of the same variety, because limited water gives a thicker, heavier leaf with the alkaloid concentrated into it rather than spread across bulk. That is the background to the strong leaf of the rain-fed belts in Gujarat and northern Karnataka.

Curing does not create nicotine, but it can lose it. Air-curing preserves alkaloid well, part of why burley reads above flue-cured, and sun-curing, used for oriental and much Indian bidi leaf, preserves body. Fermentation and long ageing, used for dark and cigar leaf, reduce nicotine over time, since long exposure to heat and humidity gives alkaloid a route to degrade.

Why the assay matters to an extraction buyer

For a nicotine extraction plant the assay is not a quality badge. It is the denominator on the cost sheet. Freight, handling, storage and the fixed cost of running the plant for a batch are all paid against tonnes, while the product is sold against kilos of alkaloid, so a richer feed spreads the same costs over more output.

Dead weight works the other way, since sand, soil, stem and free moisture are all mass that is paid for, moved and processed for no alkaloid return. Consistency counts too, because a plant running against a stable feed holds recovery better than one facing lots that swing widely between deliveries. The practical conclusion is to buy on an assayed figure for the lot in front of you, with the basis stated, rather than on a leaf-type name and an industry average.
