Zimbabwe closed 2026 at US$2.49 a kilogram
Zimbabwe's 2026 marketing season closed with a record crop and a materially lower price. The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board ticker recorded a season-to-date figure of 359,099,787 kg at an average of US$2.49 per kg. A year earlier the average sat at roughly US$3.30.
The crop was the largest Zimbabwe has produced. The return to growers was not.
This is a global condition, not a Zimbabwean one
Universal Corporation put global flue-cured production excluding China at approximately 2.204 billion kg in 2025, against 1.839 billion kg in 2024. That is an increase of around 365 million kg in a single year, which is close to an entire Zimbabwean crop added to world supply.
TIMB itself attributed the price decline to increased supply from major producing countries, higher carry-over stocks and subdued international demand, and noted that Brazil, Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia were facing similar conditions. India added volume too, as the Andhra Pradesh FCV overshoot shows.
The grade-level picture is worth separating from the headline. The TIMB matrix for 15 October 2026 quoted 56 grades spanning US$0.20 to US$5.30 per kg. The national average is volume-weighted and therefore pulled down by the bulk of low grades; it is not the price of good leaf.
What a long market changes
When supply is plentiful and buyers are disciplined, three things tend to happen at once. Carry-over stock from previous seasons circulates more widely. The spread between grades widens, because buyers can afford to be selective. And the crop year behind a given lot becomes harder to take on trust.
None of that is a reason to avoid buying. It is a reason to buy on the tested figure rather than on the description, and to ask what year the material was grown in before agreeing a price.
We quote every lot on its own assay and state the crop year on the batch report. In a market this long, that is worth more than it is in a tight one.
